Move the mouse around the screen. Notice that the cursor changes from an arrow to an I-beam as you move across the text area of the document.
return to table of contentsThe following illustration shows the word processor window.
Move the cursor to the menu line at the top of the screen. Click and hold the mouse button at each choice, and other choices will appear.
These are called pull-down menus. If a choice is black, it can be selected. If it is gray, it cannot be selected at this time.
The ruler is located at the top of the screen below the title bar.
Just above the ruler are icons, or pictures, which allow you to format your document. From right to left, these are: spacing, justification, tab settings, time and date. The ruler itself has arrows at left and right which allow you to set margins.
There are scroll bars at the right and bottom of the screen. You use these to scroll through a document. There are several ways to scroll, from slow to fast.
The scrolling can also move more quickly if you are working with a longer document.
The scrolling can move even faster.
Go to the box on the scroll bar, click and hold the mouse button, and drag the box to another position on the bar.
The document window can be changed in size. This is very helpful when you have several documents that you're working on. It allows you to see other windows that are open.
At the lower right corner of the screen, there is a shape that looks like two nested boxes. Move the pointer to the box, click the mouse button and drag the corner up and to the left. This makes the window smaller.
There is also a size box at the top right corner of the window. Click once to quickly re-size the window. Click once to re-size it back.
The window can also be moved around the screen. Again, this is a help when you have more than one application or document open..
Position the pointer on the title bar at the top of the document. Press the mouse button, and drag the window around the screen.
A document can be closed by moving the pointer to File on the menu bar, and dragging to Close.
A document can also be closed by clicking once in the close box at the upper left corner of the title bar.
At times, it is faster to copy and paste text than it is to retype the same
thing over again.
