The mouse is a hand-operated device that allows easy control of the pointer on the screen.
When the mouse is moved on a surface, the ball on the underside moves, causing the pointer on the screen to move.
The mouse registers relative movement - it may be picked up and set down again without moving the pointer.
There are three ways to use the mouse button. They are: clicking, double clicking, and clicking, holding down and dragging.
Clicking selects (highlights) something.
Double clicking opens something.
Clicking, holding down and dragging moves something or surrounds it.
Icons are pictures on the monitor that show what disks or programs are available to use.
Selecting is performed by clicking the pointer on an icon. Position the pointer on the trash icon. Click the mouse button. As you click, the trash icon is highlighted. That means you have selected it. Click on the other icons you see on the screen.
Dragging is performed by clicking on an icon and moving the mouse as you continue to hold the button down. Position the pointer on the trash icon again. Press and hold down the mouse button as you move the mouse, then release the mouse button. Practice moving other icons around. Do not place one icon on top of another.
The Menu Bar is at the top of the screen. Beneath each choice is a series of other choices. Press the mouse button and hold it as you view the choices displayed under each menu item.
